Opel unveils Astra GTC

A warm front before the hot OPC materialises

Opel has revealed its answer to the likes of the Renault Mégane coupé and Volkswagen Scirocco. According to the company, the GTC will be the ultimate Astra in terms of both design and styling. The new car definitely bears a strong resemblance to the eye-pleasing Astra GTC Paris Concept that wowed the crowds at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

"We wanted the Astra GTC to be the ultimate expression of Opel's design language 'sculptural artistry meets German precision' and to embody our passion for the automobile," says Mark Adams, Vice President, Opel/Vauxhall Design. "However, we did not want emotion to overshadow functionality: the Astra GTC is a clever and affordable dream car."

The GTC features just three strong character lines in its profile, while tweaks to the front (including LED daytime running lights with a wing-shaped motif) and a dramatic re-style of the brake lamps further differentiate this car from its workaday siblings.

In Europe, a choice of four engines will be offered – diesel and a trio of petrol units. The 2,0-litre CDTI diesel has been upgraded to produce 121 kW and 380 N.m of torque. Mated with a six-speed manual gearbox, this unit is capable of propelling the GTC from 0-100 km/h in 8,9 seconds and on to a 210 km/h top speed, whilst returning 4,9 litres/100 km on the combined cycle and emitting 129 g/km of CO2. Start/stop is fitted as standard to this model as well as the two 1,4-litre petrol units, which produce 88 and 103 kW. The range-topping 1,6 turbo develops 132 kW and has a top speed of 220 km/h.

More powertrains will be offered around the world premiere at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The sportiest versions including the future high-performance OPC will follow in 2012.
